Students coming from educational systems other than Spanish or Spaniards who have completed their last year of baccalaureate outside Spain and are seeking admission to a Spanish university that has this admission criterion, must take a test known as EVAU.
The acronym EVAU stands for Evaluación para el Acceso a la Universidad. In the case of foreigners, these are tests carried out by the UNED to determine whether or not a student is suitable for admission to a Spanish public university. They are tests or exams that are linked to the branch of study to which the degree the student wishes to take belongs.
Who can take the EVAU for foreigners?
As mentioned above, we can say that the EVAU can be taken by:
1- Students with equivalent baccalaureate.
These are students who belong to educational systems of the European Union, students from educational centres with a reciprocity agreement or students with an IB Baccalaureate with a diploma. In these cases, only the specific phase of the EVAU has to be taken in order to obtain the maximum score. By taking both exams you will reach the maximum cut-off mark required by Spanish universities for their different degree courses.
2- Students with a homologable baccalaureate
Secondly, this category includes students who come from non-Spanish educational systems but who have a baccalaureate that can be recognised. That is, studies in which the Spanish Ministry of Education establishes an equivalence between the student’s final years of baccalaureate and the baccalaureate taught in Spain. This means that students of Spanish origin who have studied their final year in other countries can be considered to have a baccalaureate that can be recognised. In such cases, it is also necessary to take the full EVAU for foreigners, although this will depend on whether or not the institution you wish to enter requires it.
EVAU requirements for foreigners
In order to take part in the EVAU for foreigners, it is necessary to fulfil a series of requirements. Generally these are:
- To be in possession of a valid identity card or passport.
- To have completed the baccalaureate or secondary school.
- To register for the exams.
- Have completed the homologation process or have started it.
- Take the exams at the UNED centre closest to your home address.
Where and how do I take the exams?
There are two main ways to take the EVAU exams. On the one hand, within Spain at the UNED centres and, on the other hand, at the UNED centres closest to your current residence in other cities around the world. Nowadays, UNED has more than 100 centres all over the world as well as in Spain.
The exams consist of two parts. First, a multiple-choice multiple-choice test and then a developmental test. The evaluation criteria will depend on each particular subject.
These tests are divided into two phases:
The general and obligatory phase
This phase is made up of four subjects, three of which are common to all degree courses. These three subjects are Spanish History, Spanish Language and Literature and Foreign Language, which can be English, Italian, German or French. The fourth subject is chosen according to the branch of study to which the degree to be studied belongs.
The specific phase
The specific phase consists of a maximum of two subjects that are chosen according to the branch of study to which you want to apply and in relation to the 21 subjects of the UNED for this type of exams.
EVAU courses for foreigners
At Academia Guiu you can access a complete Selectividad preparation course for foreign students or students with an international baccalaureate, preparing in advance all the subjects required for the degree course you wish to enter. One of the options in this sense is the annual course, where you can get to know in depth all the subjects that will be examined in the university entrance exam, guaranteeing the best admission grade. This includes mock exams for the annual preparation of the Selectividad.
Another option is the intensive course or the intensive course II, which allows you to achieve the admission mark of your chosen university within five months. Academia Guiu explains that:
“For this intensive Selectividad course of the May call, students who have completed their studies in the centres located abroad attached to the UNED and the CIDEAD will take the Baccalaureate Evaluation for University Access (EBAU) at the UNED. Students with a Baccalaureate completed in an educational system other than the Spanish one, will have to take the UNED’s Specific Competence Tests (PCE), as they are an essential requirement, demanded by Spanish universities, for access to any degree course”.
