Purpose and objectives. What is the PAU for?

The PAU (University Access Assessment) aims to assess academic maturity, knowledge and skills acquired in high school or equivalent.

These exams are designed for students who have studied in Spain or within its education system and serve as a requirement for university admission. The content of the PAU exams is based on the curriculum for the second year of the Spanish Bachillerato (upper secondary education).

Mandatory general phase consisting of five exercises:

    • Catalan Language and Literature
    • Spanish Language and Literature
    • Foreign language (to be chosen from German, English, French and Italian)
    • History or History of Philosophy (students must choose between one of the two) and a compulsory subject of modality.
    • For the arts modality, through the path of visual arts, image and design:
      – Artistic Drawing
    • For the arts track, music and performing arts pathways are at the student's choice:
      – Musical Analysis
      – Performing Arts
    • For the science and technology track chosen by the students:
      – Mathematics
      – Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences
    • For the general option:
      – General Sciences
    • For the humanities and social sciences track chosen by the students:
      – Latin Language and Culture
      – Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences

Specific phase of a voluntary nature:

You can take exams in a maximum of three optional subjects from among the following:
Musical Analysis, Performing Arts, Biology, General Sciences, Artistic Drawing, Technical Drawing, Design, Physics, Artistic Fundamentals, Business Operations and Business Model Design, Geography, Geology and Environmental Sciences, History of Art, History of Music and Dance, Greek Language and Culture, Latin Language and Culture, Spanish Literature, Catalan Literature, Dramatic Literature, Mathematics, Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences, Chemistry and Technology and Engineering.

Regarding the weightings, the compulsory subject of the modality examined in the general phase will also be taken into account for the calculation of the admission grade, provided that the grade is equal to or greater than 5.

To calculate the grade for admission to Baccalaureate:

    Access note =

General phase: minimum grade 4. Specific phase: minimum grade 5.
a,b=0.2 or 0.1 according to the weighting table.

To calculate the grade required for admission to CFGS (Advanced Vocational Training Cycles):

    Access grade = NMGS grade + a * opt1 + b * opt2
a,b=0.2 or 0.1 according to the weighting table.

In Spain, the university admissions system is based on the law of supply and demand. If there are more applicants than available places for a particular course of study, the system selects those students with the highest entrance exam scores.

During the month of June, UNIVERSITY PRE-REGISTRATION takes place, a process by which students choose what studies they wish to pursue and at which university.

In Catalonia, applicants can choose a maximum of 8 degrees.

From our offices we will advise and accompany you in this university pre-registration process so that, by following the procedure, you have the maximum chances of getting the desired place.

These applications can be submitted in different autonomous communities. If you are offered places in more than one, you decide which one to enroll in. Once the application period has closed, the system, based solely on admission scores, will allocate university places and publish the cut-off score for each undergraduate degree program/university. This score indicates the minimum required to obtain a place during the current academic year, in the June application period, and may vary each year.

For your information, here you can see the grades in Catalonia in the June exam session of previous years.

Once you've been assigned a university place, if you like it, you just need to enroll at the assigned school or faculty. If you don't get your first choice, you can still wait for a better place through the reassignment process.
At the academy, we'll give you all the details and advice you need to maximize your chances of getting the place you truly want. We'll also keep you informed about registration deadlines and the start of your university classes.

Course financing is available through interest-free payment plans, allowing you to pay in convenient monthly installments. We also offer personalized advice from our professionals on a variety of topics, including:

Information and guidance on all national universities, free assistance for the Selectividad application process and support with pre-registration applications at Catalan universities.
